Karter by Scott Hildreth

Title : Karter
Author: Scott Hildreth
Published on : November 22, 2014
Cover design: Creative Book Concepts

Jak is a former Navy SEAL attempting to secretly return to civilian life after a career in the military. For some reason he’s afraid to return to his hometown. He decides to hide in the comfort of Wichita, 30 miles away.

Karter is a gorgeous woman attempting to hide from everyone. She is covered in tattoos, rides a Harley, has a foul mouth, and works as an artist painting abstract art at home. She hates people, and rightfully so. Someone has turned her in to the state for being mentally insane, and although she’s not an addict, she must complete a 28 day drug treatment.

When they meet, it’s magic. The once in a lifetime explosion of emotion, infatuation, and passion we all dream of. Immediately, they both feel love.

Jak is older.

Karter is younger.

For fear of the other person not being able to accept the truth, they each choose to not disclose their age.

But sooner or later, all secrets come to the surface.

All secrets.

And when they do, everything changes.

Everything.

“Need a ride somewhere?” I asked. “I’m not leaving it here,” she snapped as she pointed toward the cars entering the highway. “Well,” I hesitated as I turned toward the truck. “We can load it in the bed of the truck. I’ve got some tie-down straps in the back.”“You got any ramps?” she raised her eyebrows and pushed her fingers into her back pockets. “No, but we shouldn’t need them. Together we can lift the front tire into the bed, you can get in, and I’ll lift the rear in by myself,” I said confidently. “It’s a full size Harley Softail. It weighs seven fifty,” she chuckled. “Well, it’s worth a try,” I shrugged. “Better not scratch it. I’m Karter,” she said as she reached over the bike. Her hand was covered in grease, paint, and tattoos. Without hesitation, I took her hand in mine and shook it firmly. If she was nothing else, she was an interesting woman. She looked as if she spent a considerable amount of time in the sun, probably on her bike. It was difficult totell her age due to the dark color of her tanned skin, but my guess was somewhere in her latter twenties. “I’m Jak,” I said as we shook. “Yeah, you said that already. I heard you the first time,” she nodded as she released my hand. She swiftly kicked the kick-stand and began pushing the bike toward the rear of the truck. “I got it, this isn’t the first time I’ve had to push this fucker somewhere,” she said as I tried to help her push the bike backward. “Fair enough,” I said as I released the seat from my grasp and smiled. “You said that earlier. Fair enough. Quite a vocabulary you have, Jak,” she smiled as she brought the bike to a stop alongside the rear of the truck. In twenty years of travels, I’d been to more countries than I could ever count, and encountered no less than a million people. I had never, however, been exposed to any woman more brash than Karter. I smiled and rolled my eyes as she positioned the bike in the center of the truck’s bumper. “Just hop in the bed and steady the handlebars,” I said as I lowered the tailgate. “Fair enough,” she responded. I turned to face her and smiled. As she jumped into the bed of the truck, I noticed the knife clipped to her right jeans pocket. Although many people in recent years carried knives, very few chose one worth actually using. She, on the other hand, had selected one worthy of combat. One I would have chosen. “Benchmade. Nice choice,” I nodded as I pulled upward on the handlebars. “Thanks for noticing. Not much sense in carrying some cheap fucker from Wal-Mart. Anything worth doing is worth doing right,” she said as he bent over and reached for the handlebars. “I agree,” I responded. A Benchmade folding combat style knife would cost a civilian roughly three hundred dollars. When a similar but certainly less effective copy could be purchased for one tenth the cost, the few who chose to carry such a blade generally did so for a reason. A gorgeous Harley riding, tattooed, combat knife carrying woman covered in miscellaneous colors of paint and grease. If Karter was doing nothing else, she was capturing my interest. I needed to know more. As soon as the rear tire of the bike entered the bed of the truck, she grinned as if she wondered all along whether or not I could have actually lifted it. “So you’re more than just big and sexy. You’re actually useful, Jak. You hold it steady, and I’ll strap it down,” she said as she straightened the handlebars. She thinks I’m sexy. Well, Karter, the feeling is mutual. “Fair enough,” I chuckled. Maybe retirement wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Broken Course by Aly Martinez

Title: Broken Course (Wrecked and Ruined, #3)
Author: Aly Martinez
Release Date: November 10, 2014
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19169762-broken-course

Blurb

Seven years ago, my life changed forever. One accident and the person I saw in the mirror no longer resembled the woman I used to be. I was lost and confused inside my own body. I felt alone and disconnected from the world, carrying the incredible weight of guilt and loss that wasn't even mine to harbor.

Then fate led me to Leo James. He taught me that crazy could be perfectly normal and it shouldn't hurt to breathe. Don't get me wrong. Leo isn't perfect. He has his own cross to bear, and the truth is, that might be why I fell for him in the first place. But despite everything he does for me, learning to forgive myself is infinitely harder than overlooking the flaws of another.

Now, the secrets and lies of our past have begun to dictate our future—threatening to ruin us before we get the chance to try. Perhaps we were cursed from the start. Or maybe, just maybe, the remnants of our fractured lives will fit together to form one whole, where love isn’t questioned and being happy is…well, easy.

Can a second broken soul be enough to fill the voids of my own? Or will such scarred pasts prove too much for our love alone to overcome?

**Each book in this series can be read as a stand-alone.**

My review of Broken Course!

I loved the the other two book from the Wrecked and Ruined series, but wasn’t really sure when I learned this one was about Sarah. I mean we all learned to hate her in the other two, so I had very low expectations going into this book of falling in love with the characters. I couldn't have been more wrong!!!

Ms. Martinez does a great job of putting us right there in Sarah’s head in the prologue and we can start to see what she has been thinking through the first two books. I felt a real connection to her immediately.

And the hero of the story, Leo James, who could resist that hunk of awesomeness?! He falls for Sarah the second his eyes land on her and this meeting is just the beginning of their journey together.

Both Leo and Sarah have serious troubles to contend with thru the telling of their story. They aren’t perfect and their love isn’t always perfect either, BUT the fact that they work it out with each other really makes them top my list of favorite characters ever! Leo runs his own security business while Sarah is just starting a job with the newspaper office.

Leo is able to give Sarah back a piece of herself that she hasn’t really felt since before the traffic accident. She feels comfort from him that she didn’t know if she’d ever feel again:

After too many years of not even knowing myself, I don’t feel the struggle when I’m in his arms. I know Leo...and that might just be enough. At least for tonight.

And Sarah provides the same comfort for Leo, for different reasons, though. Their story is full of ups and downs like a real relationship would have, but I wouldn’t trade anything that happened in the story. I love Ms. Martinez’ writing and wish this story would have never ended.

I give Broken Course 5 out of 5 stars!

All Broke Down Review and Giveaway!

About ALL BROKE DOWN:

In this second book in New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack’s New Adult, Texas-set Rusk University series, which began with All Lined Up, a young woman discovers that you can’t only fight for what you believe in . . . sometimes you have to fight for what you love

Dylan fights for lost causes. Probably because she used to be one.

Environmental issues, civil rights, corrupt corporations, and politicians—you name it, she’s probably been involved in a protest. When her latest cause lands her in jail overnight, she meets Silas Moore. He’s in for a different kind of fighting. And though he’s arrogant and infuriating, she can’t help being fascinated with him. Yet another lost cause.

Football and trouble are the only things that have ever come naturally to Silas. And it’s trouble that lands him in a cell next to do-gooder Dylan. He’s met girls like her before—fixers, he calls them, desperate to heal the damage and make him into their ideal boyfriend. But he doesn’t think he’s broken, and he definitely doesn’t need a girlfriend trying to change him. Until, that is, his anger issues and rash decisions threaten the only thing he really cares about, his spot on the Rusk University football team. Dylan might just be the perfect girl to help.

Because Silas Moore needs some fixing after all.

Review

OMG! I've been trying to gather my words to express how much I LOVED this book! This book is phenomenal! It is filled with traditional 'Cora' wit, awkwardness and one of the best love stories.

We previously met Dylan in All Lined Up and this is the story of her and Silas...swoon!!! He has become one of my favorite all time book boyfriends (yes that hot!). If you love hot football guys and unlikely heroines, this book is for you~!

"The look in his eye flattens me, twists me up, and wrings me out. A girl could read all kinds of things into the look he is giving me" - Dylan

5 stars!

Title: Escaping Me
Author: Elizabeth Lee
Age Group: NA
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Published: July 30, 2013

Description:
All she wanted to do was forget. Forget the memory of walking in on her boyfriend in the middle of, well, another girl. Forget how she had her entire life planned out. And, forget about being perfect all the time. Unfortunately, she was Whitney Vandaveer and despite the fact that she moved to the middle of nowhere – she couldn't.

He always knew he would never be more than nothing. No job, no money, no future. Cole Pritchett had accepted the fact that he would always be the screw up and he was okay with it. Until he met her.

Here's the thing they quickly found out – sometimes we all need a little help escaping who we think we are.

Review

In this follow up to the book Escaping You we get to know more about Mallory, Whitney's crazy, fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants sister. I loved her in the first book and I couldn't wait to see more of her story and if she could possibly be tamed!!

Mallory is dealing with some tough news about the man who she believed to be her dad for her entire life and news that he is not her dad. This is a beautiful NA story of self-discovery.

Since Whitney and Cole have both relocated to Savannah, she is able to travel there every few days to 'spy' on the man who is her real father and maybe gather some information about why he left, and perhaps let him know who she is and that she exists. Along the way she encounters Boone who was more of a pest than a possible suitor. He is busy trying to find out why she comes to town and she guards that secret with her life.

Once she's settled she slowly lets Boone know more about 'Molly"...her alias. They start to become closer and settle on a no strings attached relationship, the only problem is, the more they get to know each other, the harder it is to stay true to their arrangement. This is an excellent read and I would recommend it to all NA lovers!! Well done! 5 stars!

Author Bio:
Born and raised in the middle of a Midwestern cornfield (not literally, that would be weird), I’ve spent my entire life imagining stories. Stories where the right guy always gets the right girl, first kisses are as magical as they are on the big screen and anything is completely possible if you believe.

Although this journey began years ago, it recently took on a whole new life. After years of devouring hundreds of Romance, YA and New Adult novels, I had an epiphany... I should write a book. And I did it!

If I’m not reading, writing, enjoying drinks with my amazing group of girlfriends or chasing around a sarcastically funny kid, I’m probably watching television shows that were created for teenagers, while my husband teases that I’m too old to watch them.

Excerpts

I see her wobble on her feet before she slowly tumbles to the ground. Her knees give out first, then the rest of her. It feels like I should’ve gotten to her earlier, but seconds of panic took place before my mind kicked into gear. And the rest is a blur.
Her friend’s standing over us while I rest her head on my lap. “Lucy,” I say. And it’s the first time I’ve said her name out loud. It’d been over three weeks since I’d learned it.
“What happened?” Logan asks her friend.
“I don’t know.” She’s as panicked as I am, if not worse.
“Is she dehydrated?” Logan picks up what looks like an uneaten sandwich. “Is this hers? Has she eaten?” I don’t know why it annoys me that Logan is asking all the right questions and all I can do is stare down at her. She’s breathing, so I guess that’s something.
He drops down on his knees on the other side of her and pours water from his bottle into his hand, and then he runs it across her forehead and into her hairline.
“Is she alright, mate?” Jake asks. He’s new and has a weird accent but Logan seems to think he’s cool so we keep him around.
Logan does the water thing again, and this time her eyes slowly flutter open.
And I release the breath I was holding.
“It’s okay,” Logan says to her, “you just passed out.”
He’s in her face now, and I want to punch him for being the first thing she sees when she comes to. I was here first; I was the one watching her when she fell.
It should have been me.

“I hate that guy,” Logan jerks his head toward Jake and a new kid.
“The new kid? Dylan?”
He nods. “He thinks he owns the school.”
“Really?” I glare over at them. “Apparently he kills it on the basketball court, but I dunno.” I shrug. “He hasn’t said two words to me. He seems quiet.”
“Those are the ones you have to worry about, Cam. The quiet broody assholes get all the girls. Better watch him around that new girl of yours.”
I play dumb. “What new girl?”
“Shut up, asshole. You don’t think I notice you watching her all the fucking time?”
I lift my chin. “I think if there’s an asshole in this entire school to watch out for, it’s you.”
He laughs and adjusts his cap. “You don’t need to worry about me. I’m not into stealing my friend’s girls.” He shoves his hand in his catcher’s glove and smacks my arm with it. “Say the word. Claim her. I promise to stay away and I’ll make sure she’s untouchable to everyone else.”
“I’m not an asshole and she isn’t property. I can’t own her.”
“If that’s what you want.” He raises an eyebrow. “She’s cute. In a couple years she’ll be hot. Guys will be all over her. I’m just trying to help out.”
I think about what he’s saying, and he makes a good point. Only he’s wrong—she’s hot now. “Fine. I claim her. She’s mine.”
His smirk is instant. “You can’t own someone, you pig. She isn’t property.”
I laugh. “Fuck you.”
Jake struts over to us. “Ya reckon that new kid Dylan can hang out with us this arvo? He seems like a top bloke.”
Logan’s gaze moves to me, confusion clear on his face. I shrug. He lets out a chuckle before gripping both of Jake’s shoulders and shaking him gently. He looks him right in the eye, speaking slowly and clearly. “I have no idea what the fuck you just said.”
